To Me, 28 Years Ago
In case there's an issue playing on a browser, I highly recommend downloading one of the two Windows versions, as the game is quite heavy! But for most people it should be totally fine.
Controls
- Going Left: Left Mouse Click, Left Arrow on any controller, A key, or Left Arrow Key.
- Going Right: Right Mouse click, Right Arrow on any controller, D key, or Right Arrow Key.
Warning
- Initial loading may take a little while, as the project is a bit heavy. Please give it some time!
- The game is hard. It's meant to be part of the experience. Good luck!
Presentation
To Me, 28 Years Ago is my participation in the Brainless Mini-Game Jam, based on the theme "Simpler Times". This is my first game jam game ever.
It's a runner game telling the story of a 38-year-old character who's running the same daily routine: waking up, going to work, doing extra hours, and getting back home to sleep. They're fed up with this situation and just want to go back to the simpler times, when they were playing in their bedroom, with their mom cooking good cakes for them. They decided to escape through time, going back through two busy periods of their life where they had no time for them, so they could finally get back to the good old days when everything was simpler.
Relation with "Simpler Times"
The game is meant to play on several meanings of the theme:
- Going back to melancholic, simpler young times, where you have no responsibilities in life, running away from the hard times (hence the game difficulty).
- Traveling to time periods when graphics, audio, and controls were simpler.
- Having the possibility to buy time to make your runs longer, and having a "simpler" start time to beat the game.
- A game with really simple controls (just left/right movements). I forced myself not to add any others (you can actually jump, but this is purely cosmetic).
- By progressing in the game and learning about the different obstacles you will face, you will optimize your time and have a simpler time beating it. The idea is for the hero and you to optimize your time to save extra seconds and have a simpler time going through the whole experience.
- On a creative standpoint, as there was no artist in our team, I decided to challenge myself to make the artistic aspect a "simpler time" by only using free assets you could get online and modify them myself, to try to showcase that you can still create games even when you're lacking artistic talent.
Team
The game was made in a total of 4 evenings by myself.
Frost Format joined the project as a composer and ended up working on the Main Menu Theme and the teleport FX.
